The year your Trex deck was built decides how it can be repaired
Trex decking falls into two distinct eras, and they fail in completely different ways. Boards produced before roughly 2010 were uncapped — the wood-flour-and-polymer composite was exposed directly to weather. Those decks characteristically degrade across their whole surface: flaking, mould growth, and colour loss spread board to board rather than concentrating at a point of damage. Later capped generations — Transcend, Enhance, Select — carry a bonded polymer shell that resists all of that, and consequently fail locally instead: a burn, a deep gouge, an impact crack.
That distinction changes everything about a repair. On a capped deck, replacing the affected boards restores the deck completely. On an early uncapped deck, replacing a few boards addresses a symptom of a surface that’s aging as a whole — and the new boards won’t resemble the old ones in any case. Knowing which deck you have is the first question worth answering, and it’s the first thing we determine on site.
Underneath both, the same thing is true: the frame is wood. Trex boards don’t rot, but the joists, beams, and ledger carrying them do — and on multifamily and HOA properties that wood structure is exactly what SB 721 and SB 326 inspect. Can Trex decking be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Individual boards can be replaced, and on capped Trex decks that fully resolves localised damage. What can’t be done is refinishing: the cap is the board’s weather protection, so sanding out a scratch or gouge breaches it and exposes the core. Damage through the cap means a new board.
How do you repair a cracked Trex board?
The board is replaced — but the more important step is finding why it cracked. On Trex decks the usual causes are joist spacing wider than the required span (especially where boards run diagonally), fasteners set too close to a board end, or impact. If the cause isn’t corrected, the replacement eventually cracks too, so we check spans and fastening as part of the repair.
Our Trex deck is old and the surface is flaking. Can that be fixed?
That pattern usually indicates early-generation uncapped Trex, produced before the capped lines. Those boards weather across their whole surface rather than at points of damage, so replacing a few won’t restore the deck and new boards won’t match. We’ll assess honestly and lay out the realistic options — section replacement or re-decking — rather than sell you a repair that postpones the same conversation.
Will replacement boards match our existing Trex?
Not straight from the box. Composite fades over its first year or two before stabilising, so new stock reads brighter than aged boards. We handle this by relocating: aged boards are pulled from low-visibility areas — behind grills, along walls, under furniture — and moved into the visible repair, with the new material installed where nobody looks.
What if our Trex profile has been discontinued?
It happens regularly; several lines have been retired over the years. When an exact match isn’t available, you have two realistic options: match as closely as current stock allows and accept slight variation, or replace a defined section so the transition reads as intentional.
