01 The situation
The challenge
From the dining floor the deck read as tired, not dangerous — graying boards, a few cupped and split planks, one soft section where the surface had started to give underfoot near the tables. The real problem was underneath. At the post-to-beam connections carrying the outer edge of the deck, water had been sitting at the joints for years: the beam ends had blackened and gone punky, and the galvanized brackets were corroding where they tied post to beam. Those are the exact joints that hold a deck full of guests over a hillside drop.
The complication was that the restaurant could not close. The deck is the venue — it seats a large share of the covers, especially in season — so the work had to move across the structure section by section while service continued around it, and every part reopened had to be safe to seat that evening.
02 Execution
What we did
We treated the surface and the structure as two problems and fixed both, in sequence, section by section:
Isolated one section at a time behind temporary barrier, kept the rest of the deck in service, and pulled the failing boards to expose the framing and connections beneath
Restored the post-to-beam connections: cut back and replaced the rot-damaged beam ends, sistered where needed, and installed new galvanized structural brackets and through-bolts at every compromised joint
Replaced the deck surface with new boards over the sound framing, set with proper spacing and fall so water drains off the deck instead of pooling at the joints
Sealed the new surface and the exposed timber connections, and walked each finished section before it went back into service
03 Outcome
The result
The deck came back with a sound surface and, more importantly, restored connections at every point that carries the crowd — new hardware, sealed timber, and drainage that keeps water off the joints that failed the first time. The restaurant served through the entire project, reopening each section as it finished, and the owner now has a documented condition and repair record for the deck to hand an insurer or a building official.
