Trex Composite Decking Material

Trex is a wood-plastic composite. Most of it is recycled sawdust and plastic film, pressed into boards and covered with a protective shell. That answers the basic question but leaves out most of what a buyer has to decide. Trex composite decking materials come in several lines. They differ in shell, color, profile, warranty, and, with the newest line, fire rating.

Decks & Balcony builds with these boards on apartments, condos, HOA properties, and hotels from the Bay Area to Sacramento. This guide covers how the Trex lines are ranked, what each one suits, and how they handle California weather and multifamily warranty terms. The warranty point surprises most property managers, so it belongs in the decision before color selection.

What Trex Composite Decking Materials Are Made Of

Ask what Trex is made of and the answer is mostly recycled waste. The core blends reclaimed wood fiber, largely sawdust from woodworking plants, with recycled polyethylene film. That film comes from grocery bags, dry-cleaning bags, and the plastic wrap on paper towels. The manufacturer puts the recycled share at about 95 percent and makes the boards in the U.S. Heat and pressure fuse the mix into a dense board that does not rot or splinter and never needs stain.

A capped polymer shell surrounds the core. The core carries the load, and the shell takes the weather, resisting fading, staining, and scratching. The shell is also the main difference between the Trex materials at each price level. Early composite boards had no cap and weathered unevenly, so every composite deck we build today uses capped boards.

Knowing what Trex decking is made of explains two things about installation. The plastic in the core moves with temperature more than lumber does, so end gaps are set for the temperature on installation day. Cutting the boards also releases wood dust, so each one ships with California’s Proposition 65 wood-dust warning. Our crews cut with dust collection on occupied buildings.

Here is what a Trex deck is in practice: a composite surface on a wood frame. The boards replace the decking and nothing else. Joists, beams, posts, and the ledger stay pressure-treated lumber, and on a rental or condo building that structure stays in the SB 721 or SB 326 inspection cycle.

The Trex Levels: Enhance, Select, Transcend, Signature

The company sorts its boards into tiers. Enhance is the entry level, Select is the middle, and Transcend and Transcend Lineage form the upper tier. Signature sits above them as the most scratch-resistant board the brand makes. The types of Trex decking differ more in the shell than in the core. Each step up gives a harder surface, more colors, and a longer warranty.

Enhance comes in two sub-lines, Basics and Naturals. Most owners start here when they price Trex as a deck material against lumber. Its boards are scalloped underneath, which keeps their weight close to lumber, and they carry a 25-year residential warranty. Select carries 35 years. Its boards are solid and slightly thinner than the other lines, and in 2025 three newer Select colors received the heat-mitigating technology. The manufacturer advises against combining Select with Enhance or Transcend on one surface, because the height difference creates a tripping hazard.

Transcend and Transcend Lineage both carry 50 years. Lineage adds heat-mitigating color technology, though the maker notes those boards still get hot in direct sun. Signature also carries 50 years and is the one line not rated for heating and bending into curves. On a shared walkway, choosing between Trex levels depends on foot traffic and sun as well as looks.

Line What sets it apart Residential warranty Commercial warranty Where it fits
Enhance (Basics, Naturals) Scalloped, lighter board; entry-level shell 25 years 10 years Budget-led re-decks and private balconies
Select Mid-tier shell; solid, slightly thinner board; three newer colors with heat-mitigating technology 35 years 10 years Whole surfaces where the line will not be mixed
Transcend Broadest color and finish range, shared with Lineage 50 years 10 years Shared walkways and amenity decks
Transcend Lineage Heat-mitigating color technology 50 years 10 years West-facing and full-sun surfaces
Signature Most scratch-resistant shell 50 years 10 years High-traffic surfaces where scuffs show
Refuge (PVC) Class A flame spread; ignition-resistant 50 years Confirm current terms Parcels in mapped fire hazard zones

Trex Refuge: Fire-Rated PVC Decking

In January 2026 the Trex product lines gained a board made differently from the rest. Refuge is cellular PVC rather than wood-plastic composite. It meets ASTM E84 Class A flame spread and the ASTM E2768 ignition-resistance standard. The manufacturer markets it for Wildland-Urban Interface areas. The release started in regions where codes require that performance, so supply is still regional.

The East Bay hills and much of the North Bay sit inside fire hazard severity zones mapped by CAL FIRE. On those parcels the building department asks for decking that meets the state’s wildfire construction standards. The Office of the State Fire Marshal keeps a separate listing category for WUI decking, and boards appear in it under dated listings that have to be renewed. Before ordering Trex composite decking materials for a fire-zone parcel, we check the exact board against the current listing.

Board Profiles and Other Trex Decking Options

Line and color are only part of the order. Each line comes in several profiles. The Trex profiles decide how the deck is fastened and how its edges are finished:

  • Grooved-edge boards, slotted on both sides for Hideaway hidden fasteners, which leave the surface free of screw heads.
  • Square-edge boards, face-fastened like lumber and used on perimeter boards, borders, and stair treads.
  • Scalloped boards in the Enhance line, hollow underneath to reduce weight.
  • Fascia boards that cover rim joists, stair stringers, and risers in a matching color.
  • Railing systems, from composite to aluminum, sold in the same family.
  • Lengths of 12, 16, and 20 feet; longer boards mean fewer butt joints on a long walkway.

The parts are designed to be ordered together. Specifying Trex decking products as one matched system gives the cleanest result: decking, fascia, railing, and fasteners from one family. Mixing makers is also acceptable on a tighter budget, as long as it is a deliberate choice. Our Trex deck building work settles that before pricing, since the line and the components change the total about as much as the deck size.

Mixing profiles is normal practice: a grooved-edge field with a square-edge picture-frame border is the standard layout. Mixing Trex collections on one surface causes problems, since Select boards sit lower than boards from the other lines. Use one line per walking surface and keep the others for fascia or a separate deck.

What the Trex Warranty Covers on Apartments, Condos, and HOAs

The 25, 35, and 50-year figures in the brochures are residential terms. The warranty defines a residential application as an installation on an individual residence. Apartment walkways, condo balconies, and hotel decks fall under the commercial term, which is 10 years across the composite lines. A manager comparing Trex composite lines by the residential numbers is comparing figures that do not apply to the building.

Three more terms belong in the budget. On a private home, the residential term is pro-rated after year ten, so a late claim recovers a smaller share of the product cost. The warranty covers the Trex composite decking materials themselves, not the labor and freight to replace them. Installation outside the published span, gapping, and fastening requirements voids it, which on a re-deck usually means joists spaced wider than the boards allow.

Mold and mildew are excluded as well. Shaded walkways and north-facing balconies still need washing on a schedule, and that schedule belongs in the maintenance plan. These terms sit next to what a property manager under California balcony law already tracks. Any Trex comparison between bids should account for them.

Is Trex Decking Worth It?

Apartment walkway half re-decked, weathered wood boards beside new brown composite boards

As a deck material, Trex pays off most clearly where the alternative is a wood surface that someone strips and re-stains every few years. The boards end that cycle. They pay off least where the frame underneath is near the end of its life, because the boards will outlast it. Every deck building decision we make starts with the frame for that reason.

Is Trex the best composite decking for every building? No single brand is. The brand is the largest maker in the category, which helps when a matching board is needed years later. On a specific property, the fire listing, exposure, and foot traffic decide the choice, along with whether the frame can be brought to the required spacing.

The cost question has a direct answer, even without a figure. Trex composite decking materials cost more to install than lumber and remove a recurring refinishing expense from every year after. On a re-deck the frame correction is often the larger part of the price, and two bids can differ widely because each assumed a different line.

How Trex Holds Up in Northern California Weather

Conditions differ across the regions we work in. Near the Bay and the coast, fog and salt air keep surfaces damp and attack metal, so we specify stainless steel fasteners and keep the gaps clear. In Sacramento and the Central Valley, summer afternoons above 100°F make dark boards too hot for bare feet, so lighter colors and heat-mitigating boards make sense there. Winter rain on shaded walkways is what grows mildew on all types of Trex boards.

Read reviews on Trex composite decking with those conditions and the installation in mind. A board that cracked over joists spaced too wide says more about the frame than the product. A complaint about heat on a dark west-facing deck in Stockton or Modesto is a question of color and exposure. Mold on an unwashed shaded walkway is a maintenance issue the warranty already excludes.

How to Compare Trex Decking Lines Before Ordering

Most comparisons start with color samples. A Trex decking comparison that protects a building runs in this order:

  1. Confirm whether the property counts as a residential or a commercial application under the warranty.
  2. Check whether the parcel sits in a mapped fire hazard severity zone and which boards are listed for it.
  3. Measure the existing frame: 16 inches on center for perpendicular boards, 12 for diagonal layouts and on stair stringers.
  4. Choose the line by exposure, with harder shells for heavy traffic and heat-mitigating colors for full sun.
  5. Settle the profiles: grooved field with hidden fasteners, square-edge borders and treads.
  6. Decide whether fascia, railing, and fasteners come from the same family or are chosen separately.
  7. File the installation records and warranty paperwork with the compliance file.

Narrowing Trex options in that order turns a product choice into a scope of work that can be built and inspected. A recent deck, walkway, and stair replacement in Menlo Park shows the result on an occupied 12-unit apartment community.
